Never giving up. When establishing relationships with prospective clients, many people give up after an initial introduction. Politely following up promotes the discovery of common ground and brings sensible solutions to real business issues.
In 2004, I left the hi-tech industry to join an inner city charity devoted to making a difference in the lives of people experiencing homelessness. For the next six years I worked on the front lines with homeless youth out on the streets where they lived. Since returning to my professional career, I realize that all of us are responsible for working to create communities that provide inclusive, meaningful opportunities for everyone.

The development of my law practice here in Burlington. Prior to practicing law, I never pictured myself as an entrepreneur. After my first year of post secondary I managed to get a summer job working for two brother’s who at the time owned five automotive protection & detailing franchises spanning from London to Oakville. The brother’s both grew up in a small town like myself and were successful at a pretty young age. I guess after working for them for a year, they realized some potential and promoted me to be an assistant manager at one of their locations on Hamilton mountain. Shortly after that I became the manager of the same location, had a company car and a small expense account all before the age of 20. The two brother’s really took me under their wing and taught me a lot about small business management, sales, marketing, and finance. Through their mentoring, I realized that I wanted to go into business for myself.
Back to the brother’s in the story above, they wanted to sell one of their worst performing stores. At the time, a friend of mine was working in the automotive field as well and we shared the same ambitions about being self employed. With some help we were able to purchase one of their locations in Oakville. After a lot of hard work, long hours, and knocking on doors, we were able to turn the store around. After about 5 years were the top sales location in the province and in the top three in Canada. We were invited by the head office to be on North American franchise advisory committees and speak on panels at the National conventions. This all happened before we turned thirty.
